Sound for Video

One of the areas of video that is often overlooked is audio quality. This may be OK for family get togethers it doesn’t work so well for
music recordings and presentations.

The problem is most video cameras will pick up the noise of the room often times more than the performance that is being recorded. Also the sound quality of most built in microphones is not great.

The best way to get good sound while shooting video is either have a video camera that has a remote microphone input and then connect a better microphone and place it near the action or use a separate audio recorder.

When recording music I almost always use a separate recording system. This way I can mix and master the audio tracks to get the best sound quality. The audio tracks are later synced to the video clips.

Using a remote microphone or two work for simple sound recording like presentations, speeches etc. works good also as long as the audio coming in is not too complex.

A good quality soundtrack is vital to having a video production that really captures the performance.
